SQUANTZ POND – New Fairfield and Sherman, CT

Connecticut’s State Park – SQUANTZ POND in New Fairfield, CT  and Sherman, CT is opened from Memorial Day to Labor Day from 8am to 6:30pm for swimming, fishing, boating, scuba diving and picnicking.

The 172 acres are surrounded by mountains with hiking trails, a beach area and is a delight to photographers all year round.

History of Squantz Pond by Wikipedia:

Settlers from Fairfield, Connecticut received approval from the General Assembly to establish a new township and they negotiated with Chief Squantz of the Schaghticoke (tribe), a tribe of Algonquianlineage. They “purchased” a 32,000 acre (130 km²) tract of land, that is now New Fairfield and Sherman, for the equivalent of about 300 dollars and on April 24, 1729, The deed was recorded on May 9,1729, and is now deposited in the archives of the State Capitol in Hartford, Connecticut.

It is said that Squantz Pond State Park takes its name from Chief Squantz who lived at the northern tip of the lake, which is now separated from the rest of Candlewood Lake by the Route 39 causeway. Before becoming a state park, the area around Squantz Pond was also a farm and an apple orchard. Despite many changes to the land, the presence of the original residents is still marked by occasionally uncovered artifacts such as stone adzes, mallets and other tools. The remains of an Indian canoe over 22 feet long and 5 feet wide was raised from the bottom of the lake, leading to speculation that even before the settlers came, Squantz Pond may have been much larger than it was just prior to its expansion during the flooding of Candlewood Lake.

SQUANTZ POND – a wonderful place for the family.  While visiting, please swim in the designated areas and have fun!

Friends on the Road in Real Estate

As many of you know, I am a Realtor in New York and Connecticut.  Within those 2 states, I cover 5 counties – Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess counties in NY and Fairfield and parts of Litchfield counties in CT.  That is ALOT of driving!

Along the way, I have seen many interesting places and have met some new friends – critter friends – some small and some … not so small!

Adorable pup in Carmel, NY – at first, he came out of his home barking up a storm, then allowed me to step out of the car to view his property.

A very brave Chipmunk who allowed me to snap a few photos.

Stopped to say “Hello” to these fellows after a  very exciting viewing of the home of an Oscar winning actor in Patterson, NY!

I didn’t get out of the car for this photo!

Many, many ponds, lakes, streams and reservoirs through out all 5 counties full of fish, turtles, frogs, ducks, geese, swans, ….

Two Doves who kept getting closer and closer to me.

If your thinking of purchasing a home and moving here, just think – when the kids ask for a pet, just take them for a ride – there is so much to see!

HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!

What Is A Dad?

A dad is someone who
wants to catch you before you fall
but instead picks you up,
brushes you off,
and lets you try again.

A dad is someone who
wants to keep you from making mistakes
but instead lets you find your own way,
even though his heart breaks in silence
when you get hurt.

A dad is someone who
holds you when you cry,
scolds you when you break the rules,
shines with pride when you succeed,
and has faith in you even when you fail…

~By Susan Ceylise.~

I’d like to wish every Father …. and Father To Be – a Wonderful Father’s Day!!

LIFE AS A REALTOR – Realtor Open House Day (5)

In Westchester County last Thursday, Carolyn – an associate Realtor in my office – and I saw some magnificent homes

Our first home, currently on the market for $12,500,000 in BEDFORD – NY,was an 1927 Georgian Manor house built with original bricks from a 16th Century English Estate.  With over 23 acres, a pool, barn, twin gate houses and a multi car garage – we were in awe while viewing every room, including the maids quarters, attic and we even dared to view the basement!  All the while wondering – Oh! – If These Walls Could Talk.

We moved onto a lovely Country House in POUND RIDGE, NY.  This home was built in 1958 and designed by Livingston Elder.  With over 2 acres, a pool, fruit trees and overlooking the Ward Pound Ridge Preserve, making this home a private oasis.  It is currently on the market for $1,395,000.

Last, but not least, we viewed another home in Pound Ridge, The Byron Stratton House – a Historical Pound Ridge Landmark.  This Colonial, with over 6,000 square feet on over 6 acres, was originally buit in Connecticut, then brought over and rebuilt in it’s current position in 1934.  With 6 working fireplaces, a library, conservatory, gymnasium, pool, gazebo and pond – this home is a true gem.  It is currently listed for $3,999,900.

RISING HEAT CONTINUES IN CT & NY

The HEAT continues to rise in Connecticut and New York.  Once again, many schools through out have early dismissal.

In New Fairfield, CT, we received an “Alert Now” message saying that the Senior Rec Center would be open all day for anyone needing shelter from this severe heat and humidity – and that CANDLEWOOD LAKE would be open – a GREAT place to cool off!

CANDLEWOOD LAKE is a man made lake with over 60 miles of shoreline.  In 1928, Connecticut Light & Power began the process of making Connecticut’s largest lake with water from the HOUSATONIC RIVER.

In the 1940’s, summer cottages were being built around the 4 towns and city that surround the lake –  BETHEL,   BROOKFIELD,   NEW FAIRFIELD,   NEW MILFORD   AND   SHERMAN – along with the  CITY OF DANBURY.

Now, most of the homes on and near the lake, are used all year round.  They also have Lake Associations with clubhouses, beaches and private docks.

Candlewood Lake has been a favorite for residents and visitors to boat, fish, water-ski and jet-ski – or to just sit back, relax and enjoy the view!

SIZZLING HEAT in NY & CT

New York and Connecticut are under a heat advisory  and as the day goes on, temperatures are climbing into dangerous territories.  Many schools are having early dismissal or no school at all due to power outages.

PLEASE remember WATER, WATER, WATER!!  Drink lots of it – pour it over you – or take a dip in the pool, ocean, lake or jump in the shower!

If possible, stay indoors – please leave the yard work for another day! Dehydration and heat exhaustion can hit you quickly and can be very dangerous!

If you need to go out, wear light colored clothing that is loose – and don’t forget a hat and sunscreen AND a water bottle.

My heart goes out to those who have no power and those who must be out doors due to work – like my husband who’s melting in Manhattan!
